【題目】 Hello. We are students from Thailand. We want to save the elephants. The elephant is one of Thailand’s symbols. Our first flag had a white elephant on it. This is a symbol of good luck.

Elephants are smart animals. They can play soccer or music. They can also draw very well. People say that “an elephant never forgets”. Elephants can walk for a long time and never get lost. They can also remember places with food and water. This helps them to live.

But elephants are in great danger. People cut down many trees so elephants are losing their homes. People also kill elephants for their ivory. Today there are only about 3,000 elephants (over 100,000 before), We must save the trees and not buy things made of ivory. Remember that March 13th is Thai Elephant Day.

本文介紹了大象處于困境并倡導(dǎo)大家保護(hù)大象。

1根據(jù)第1段第4Our first flag had a white elephant on it.(我們的第一面國旗上有一只白象。)可知第一面旗上有一頭白色的大象;故答案是a white elephant (on it)。

2根據(jù)第2段第6They can also remember places with food and water.(他們還可以記住有食物和有水的地方。)可知答案是places with food and water。

3根據(jù)第3段第2People cut down many trees so elephants are losing their homes.(人們砍倒了許多樹,大象失去了家園。)

How to save the elephants/The ways to save the elephants。

5根據(jù)第3段第3句中We must save the trees and not buy things made of ivory.(我們必須拯救樹木,不要買象牙制品。)可知“不要買象牙制品”;things made of ivory:象牙制品,made of是過去分詞做后置定語;be made of:由制作;things made of ivory可以改成定語從句 things which/that are made of ivory,先行詞是things復(fù)數(shù),引導(dǎo)詞which在定語從句做主語,可知定語從句謂語動詞使用復(fù)數(shù),可知be動詞使用復(fù)數(shù)are;故答案是are made of。

【題目】 Holmes said, ”Somebody sent a letter with five pips (桔核) in it from India, and arrived seven weeks later to kill John’s uncle. Then they sent five pips from Scotland and arrived three days later to kill John’s father. Now they have sent five pips to John from London!”

“The letters are all from sea ports. The writer was on a ship when he wrote the letters,” I replied.

‘‘Very good, Watson! And John’s enemy is in London already!”

“Well, I hope they won’t kill young John,” I said.

But they did. The next morning, we read in the newspaper that a policeman found him die near Waterloo Station. Holmes was very angry about it.

“He came to me for help and those men murdered him! I’m going to find them, if it’s the last thing I do!” he said to me, and he hurried out of the house.

At night, when he came back, he was tired, but pleased. He said, “I know the names of John’s enemies! And now I’m going to send them a surprise! This will frighten them!” He took five pips from an orange put them in an envelope. On it he wrote “S. H. for J. C.”

“I’m sending the pips to captain James Calhoun. His ship is called the Star. He and his men are sailing back to Georgia, USA.”

“ How did you find him, Holmes?” I asked.

“Ship’s papers,” he said, “I’ve looked at hundreds of them today. Only one ship, the Star, was in the three ports at the right times. This morning the Star left London to sail back to Georgia. I found out that the captain and two of his men, all Americans, weren’t on the ship last night, so I’m sure they killed John. 【題目】 The Life of Jane Goodall

On the morning of July 14, 1960, Jane Goodall arrived at Lake Tanganyika in the Gombe National Park. Then around 5 p. m, Jane went into the forest to find her first chimpanzee.

As a young woman, Jane Goodall was following her childhood dream of studying chimpanzees in Africa. After many months of difficult work she made three important discoveries: chimpanzees ate meat, they used tools to get food, and they also made tools.

Every evening, Jane wrote her findings in her journal. She began to publish articles in magazines. After a while, Jane was accepted by a university. Her work was also making her famous. There was a documentary (紀(jì)錄片)film,Miss Goodall and the Wild Chimpanzees (1963), and then My Friends the Wild Chimpanzees (1969), the first of many books. During the 1970s, Gombe became a dangerous place to work. It is on the border of four different countries and there was fighting among them. Many foreigners left, but Jane stayed to continue her workand noted that chimpanzees could also be violent.

A different problem developed in Gombe in the 1980s. The forests were getting smaller and there was no enough space for chimpanzees because of the increasing human population. As a result, there were only about a hundred chimpanzees living in Gombe by t the end of the1980s. Jane realized something had to be done, so she made a plan with the local community to grow more trees.

At the beginning of the 1990s, Jane left Gombe. She set up sanctuaries (庇護(hù)所)for chimpanzees which had been caught because of the trade in chimpanzee meat. She also started giving speeches. She has very little spare time but still spends part of every year in the forest in Gombe, watching her chimpanzees.
