The water hyacinth (水胡蘆) grows in tropical (熱帶的) countries. It has beautiful purple-blue flowers, but everybody hates it.

Millions and millions of these plants grow in rivers and lakes. Sometimes the plants become so thick that people can walk on them. People cannot travel in boats on the water, and they cannot fish in it. The plants stop the water from moving. Then the water carries diseases. Farmers cannot use the water on their land.

Now scientists think that water hyacinths can be useful. The plants are really a free crop. No one has to take care of them. They just grow and grow and grow. What can farmers use them for?

Some fish like to eat them. Farmers can grow these fish in the lakes and rivers.

Workers can collect and cut the plants with machines. Then they can also make fertilizer to make their crops grow better. They can also make feed (飼 料) for their farm animals.

Maybe it will be possible to make methane gas (沼氣) for energy. Methane gas can be made from plants. We bum gas from petroleum (石、油) for energy.    All the wisdom of the times, all the stories that have delighted mankind for centuries, are easily and cheaply available to all of us in books, but we must know how to make use of this treasure. The unluckiest people in the world are those who have never discovered how satisfying it is to read good books.

I’m very interested in people and finding out about them. Some of the most amazing people I've met could only be found in a writer's imagination, then in this book, and then, again,in my imagination. I've found in books new friends and new worlds.

Reading is fun,not because the writer is telling you something, but because it makes your mind work. Your own imagination works along with the writer's or even goes beyond his. Your experience, compared with his, brings you to the same or different conclusions, and your ideas develop as you understand his.

We can often find something connected with ourselves in books. Every book stands by itself, like a one-family house, but books in a library are like houses in a city. Although they are separate (分開的) ,in some ways they are connected with each other. The same ideas,or related ones, appear in different places;the human problems that repeat themselves in life repeat themselves in books, but with different solutions according to different times. Books influence each other. They connect the past, the present and the future and have their own age groups, like families. Wherever you start reading, you connect yourself with one of the families of ideas, and in the end,you not only find out about the world and the people in it,you find out yourself, too.

Reading can only be fun if you expect it to be. If you only read the books somebody tells you “ought” to read, you probably won’t have fun. But if you put down a book you don't like and try another till you find one that means something to you,and then relax with it,you will almost certainly have a good time!

1. 判斷正誤(“T”表示正確,“F”表示錯(cuò)誤) :

() The writer is advising us to enjoy ourselves by reading.

2. 完成句子:

The people who don't enjoy reading good books are.

3. 簡略回答問題:

4. 找出并寫下第四段的主題句:
