Four years ago, I, a 17-year-old girl, arrived at Wellesley College. I cried when my parents dropped me off in my dormitory (宿舍). I thought to myself, “This is what loneliness feels like.” Just at that time, I had forgotten how excited I was for college.
Four years has nearly passed, I am now 21 years old, just two months from graduating from college. Once again, I have reached a critical juncture (緊要關(guān)頭) in my life where I am going to be alone in a new way.
In four years, I have experienced a lot, happy time, sad moment and ordinary days. How grateful I am for the ones who have shown me the way and taught me to be strong when I felt hopeless. How lucky I am to know that I have a home to return to, a home where chaos (混亂) and arguments may occur, but where I still feel safe. A place where I am loved unconditionally, regardless of my mistakes.
Tomorrow, my mother turns 50. It is because of my mother that I’ve learned to love myself, to respect myself, and above all, to be a good person. It is because of her that even throughout all of my hardships and struggles, I have known that giving up is not and will not ever be a choice. It is because of her that I have truly learned the lesson that age is only a number, and what matters is your spirit and character.
My mother and I have sometimes clashed (沖突) head. She is the strongest person I know, the person who I disagree most. She has told me that I am the only person that is responsible for my life. But today I have to tell her that she has been wrong.
She doesn’t realize that there is another person who will never leave me. There’s another person who will always there for me and who will love me forever. That person is her. She is the first person I will call when I am sad, in trouble, or feeling blue. She will never lie to me to spare my feelings (不使我傷心).
I have come so far these fast four years. I still have a long life to live. A life that I hope will be full of adventure, success, and happiness. Although my mum was right when telling me that I am the only one responsible for what happens in my life. Mom, you’ve helped me so far. You are my hero. One day I hope to be like you.

In China, children like to make promises by hooking pinkies with each other. They say, “A pinkie promise must be ___ for 100 years.” Then they may press their thumbs together to complete the promise. Sometimes, __ will hook pinkies and promise to be together forever.
There are many theories(推測(cè)) on the origin of the pinkie promise. Some say it comes from a nursery rhyme. __ say it was introduced from the West – born out of a love story where a man and a woman hooked fingers.
One theory is that it may have ___ to do with the role of fingers in Chinese culture. The Chinese character for “finger” also means “aim(旨)” (referring to people’s thoughts). So hooking fingers can be seen as the exchanging of ___.
Therefore, the fingers play a(n) ____ role in making an oath(盟約): They can not only be used to complete a promise, but also be cut for making a blood oath. When someone swears to heaven, he uses his ____ to point to the sky.
____, hooking fingers means making a serious promise. In some movies, a person who breaks a promise may have his little finger cut ____! Of course, this kind of thing is not very likely to happen in real life. But we can still see____important “pinkie promises” can be. So next time, when you hook pinkies with someone, you’d better be careful with your promise!
