Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another in some ways. Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways.
Chinese New Year is an important traditional Chinese holiday. It is also traditional for every family to clean the house, in order to sweep away bad luck. Windows and doors will be decorated with red color paper-cutting. Other activities include lighting firecrackers(鞭炮) and giving money in red paper envelopes.
In western countries, people usually celebrate New Year at midnight on December 31st or January 1st. People may go to parties and they may drink champagne(香檳)at midnight. During the first minute of the New Year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the year ahead. It is also a common western custom to make a New Year’s promise called a resolution. New Year’s resolutions usually include promises to try something new or change a bad habit in the New Year.
Other New Year traditions are followed to bring good luck in the New Year. One widespread Spanish tradition for good luck is to eat grapes on New Year’s Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck the person will have in the coming new year. In France, people eat pancakes for good luck in the New Year. In the United States, some people eat black-eyed peas for good luck—but to get good luck for a whole year you have to eat 365 of them!

The Notting Hill Carnival(狂歡)is regarded as the largest street party in Europe. The Carnival, which takes place in the streets of the west London district, was made famous by the movie Notting Hill starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.
This great festival began with the Black immigrants(移民)from the Caribbean, particularly from Trinidad, where the Carnival tradition is very strong. At that time, they didn't have working opportunities and their housing conditions were poor. So people there created a festival to fight against racism(種族主義).When the Notting Hill Carnival first started, around 500 people attended the Caribbean festival. Today it attracts hundreds of thousands to London.
This holiday always falls on the last Sunday of August and ends on the following Monday. There are scores of massive "sound systems", many beautiful and big floats(游行彩車(chē))and steel drum bands(鋼鼓樂(lè)隊(duì)).There are hundreds of stalls(貨攤)along the streets of the area selling all kinds of food and drinks including Caribbean specialties(特產(chǎn)).
Notting Hill Carnival is completely free, but a certain amount of money is needed when you go to the parties and warm-ups at bars and clubs. It is really wonderful that so many people can come together for one weekend of eating, laughter and music- forgetting about life's troubles for 48 hours. The smiles and dancing are the spirits of the Carnival. It has become one of the symbols of Britain.
