My favourite great book is The Adventure of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain.Tom lives with his aunt Polly in a quiet street of St. Petersburg, Missouri. He’s a lively and clever young boy,and he finds himself in many exciting adventures(冒險(xiǎn)).He runs away with his two friends,Huck Finn and Joe,to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River for several days. With Huck he goes looking for treasure, with Becky he gets lost in a cave.a(chǎn)nd finally, they find a box of gold.

My favourite scene in the book is when everyone thinks Tom is dead.He decides to go to his own funeral. He hides and watches for a time, and then suddenly he appears. Everyone is surprised to see him but they’re also pleased to see him alive.

Tom is the hero of the story, but there are other important characters.Huck is an outsider and everyone is afraid of him.Becky is pretty with fair hair,Joe is Tom’s best friend.a(chǎn)nd Injun Joe is the bad man of the story.

The theme of the story is about children growing up.It describes how strangers are seen in small towns of America. Finally, it talks about freedom, social rules and how people are punished(懲罰)for bad behaviour.

Why do I think The Adventure of Tom Sawyer is a great book? Mark Twain wrote the story in 1876,but it's still read and loved by people all over the world today. And although it’s only a story. Twain wrote it in the everyday English of the southern states of America in the 19th century,so it sounds very real. Today it’s thought to be one of the greatest books in American literature. Go on--- read it! I know you’ll enjoy it,too.

French doctors and American scientists have reported doing an operation in which the doctor was outside the operating room. This kind of operation is known as robotic operation.

Doctor Marescaux did the operation in an office in New York City last month, while a sixty-eight-year-old woman patient was in a hospital in Strasbourg, France.

A doctor in Strasbourg got the patient ready. He placed medical tools and a small video camera in her stomach area. Doctor Marescaux in New York watched the patient on a video screen. Then he used the computer to send messages to the robot machine. The robot moved the tools that cut the woman’s gallbladder(膽囊)away. The woman got well soon after the operation and left the hospital two days later.

Experts say the main problem with such a robotic operation is based on high-speed telecommunications between the doctor and the robot. Technology must be able to send a doctor’s order to a robot to move the tools quickly.

Experts also say a successful robotic operation will improve an operation. For example, the robot can make much smaller movements than a person can. A robot machine can turn tools in ways that a doctor’s hand cannot.

Doctors say such a robotic operation will make possible safer and better operations in the future. They say it will improve doctor training. It will also mean that doctors could do an operation on people in dangerous places far away. And it could mean that people could have operations done by top doctors without having to travel to the city where doctors work.

1.“Robotic operation” means “____”.

A. a special kind of robot invented by doctors

B. an operation done far away

C. an operation done with the help of a robot

D. something done to mend a robot

2. We use the robot in the operation because _____.

A. it can send messages at a high speed

B. even a top doctor can’t do the operation himself

C. it can make the operation safer and better

D. operations can be done without any doctors

3.If we want to use the robot in the operation, we must solve the problem of _____.

A. top doctors B. smaller movements

C. doctor training D. high-speed telecommunications

4.If the smaller movement can’t be done by doctors in the operation, we may use _______ to solve it.

A. more tools B. a robot machine

C. a video camera D. telecommunications

5.Which of the following is NOT true?

A. Robotic operation is good for doctor training.

B. Robotic operation has been used in the USA.

C. Experts speak highly of robotic operation.

D. The robot is used to watch the patient clearly.

閱讀短文,從每題所給的四個(gè)選項(xiàng)(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。

Some of the greatest problems we face today are the destruction (破壞) of our environment. Brown clouds, polluted water, endangered wild animals.., these problems seem so huge.

So my family does what we can. We take cloth bags to stores instead of using plastic bags. We walk where we don't have to drive...

But does it do any good? When I am the only one in line at the market with cloth bags, am I doing any good? Does my walking to stores make any real difference to the world?

I recently learned something about flamingos (火烈鳥) which like to get together in groups of a thousand or more. Every year, when the time comes for migration (遷徙), a few of them first takeoff from the lake. But none of the others seem to notice, so the small group returns.

However, the next day they try again. This time few more fly along with them, but most of them still pay no attention, so they return again. They try for several times. Every time a few more birds join in but, since the thousands of others still take no notice, the great migration plan is once more stopped.

Then one day something changes. The same small group of birds once again starts flying and a small number more join in just as before, then more. Finally, they all take flight and the migration really begins.

What a spectacular sight it must be—thousands of flamingos taking off into the sky at once!

A few can make a difference. Even if you're the one to take the first step, and continue trying, others will someday take notice and together we will solve even our greatest problems.

A.Because he wants to do some good to the environment.

B.Because he thinks plastic bags are more expensive.

C.Because there are only cloth bags in stores.

2.Why does the small group of flamingos return to the lake?

A.Because they are very tired.

B.Because there are some dangerous animals.

D.Because the others don’t fly along with them.

3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.The writer and his family never walk.

B.Flamingos like to get together in groups of a thousand or more.

C.Brown clouds and polluted water are the only problems we face today.

D.Flamingos never travel to other places every year.

4.What can we know from Paragraph 3?

A.The writer thinks everyone should do that.

B.There are many ways to solve the problems today.

C.The writer likes flamingos very much.

D.The writer is not sure he is doing the right thing.

5.What's the writer's purpose of writing this article?

A.To show that the writer loves to see the migration of flamingos.

D.To show that there're many problems in the world.
